Summer Water Safety Tips for Families

At Training Wheels Childcare, we believe that supporting families extends beyond the classroom. As leaders in early childhood education and childcare, we want to help parents keep their children safe,  especially during the summer months when water play and outdoor adventures are at their peak.

Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related death for children under 5 but with proper water safety education and preparation, most incidents are preventable. This is something dearly important to our childcare center as each child and family is so important to our school. Here are essential water safety tips every parent should know, along with trusted resources to help you get infant and child CPR training in Kentucky.

Water Safety Tips for Parents & Caregivers

Supervise at All Times

Never leave children unsupervised near water. Yes, even for a moment. Appoint a “Water Watcher” at family gatherings to provide focused supervision.  Here at daycare, teachers are always in pairs to ensure supervision is never lacking with multiple pairs of eyes on each child.

Install Pool Fencing

Pools should be surrounded by a four-sided fence with self-latching gates to prevent unsupervised access. Always secure hot tubs and above-ground pools.  It is important for families to talk with their children about respecting and obeying when they see fences. Fences and latches are not a replacement for proper supervision.

Enroll in Swim Lessons

Start age-appropriate swim lessons early to build your child’s confidence and skills. Many local swim centers and YMCA locations offer lessons for toddlers and preschoolers.

Learn Infant and Child CPR

In the event of an emergency, knowing how to perform CPR on infants and children can save lives. We strongly encourage all parents to become certified.  See local training options below if this is something your family still needs to do. Teachers at Training Wheels Childcare are trained in CPR and Safety.

Use Proper Safety Gear

Children should always wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets near lakes, rivers, and when boating.  As a family make it apart of the routine that you put these things on your child as soon as you are in the area of water and do not remove it till after leaving.

Remove Water Hazards

Empty bathtubs, buckets, kiddie pools, and other containers immediately after use. Even a few inches of water can pose a drowning risk to young children.
