4 Skills Kids Learn in Preschool

Preschool can help a child grow and learn so much, but many parents don’t realize everything that preschool centers have to offer children and how beneficial these skills are for their futures.

Preschools are much more than a daycare center for 3–5-year-olds. Preschools help establish foundational elements of early childhood education before a child heads off to Kindergarten.

According to an article from Scholastic Parents called The Ultimate Guide to Preschool, “Preschoolers learn ‘pre-skills,’ which lay the groundwork for the future. Through their playing, singing and learning, preschoolers gain skills that ultimately help them learn to read, write, build their math and science skills, and become successful students.”

Foundational Phonics and Reading Skills

Many children start to identify letters at age 2 or 3, and preschool curriculums help match this letter recognition with both short and long letter sounds.

From there, they build on that knowledge by helping children learn how to read small strings of letters like small words and their own names. These lessons help build a child’s confidence as they continue to understand letters and sounds and putting the two together as they learn to master new words.

Teaching children phonics foundation gives them the skills they need to go into Kindergarten and be ready to take on higher levels of reading.

Introductions to Science

In preschool, science is approached with curiosity, enthusiasm, and fun activities to explore these concepts.

Physics can be taught through playing with dominoes or parachute soldiers falling slowly with gravity.

Watching the cycle of birds laying eggs, caring for them, and seeing the baby birds hatch is a great biology or zoology lesson.

Seeing Methos blow up in a bottle of Coke is a great example of a chemistry lesson for preschoolers.

There are so many fun and creative ways to help kids engage with the science in the world around them.

The educational benefits of preschool should not be minimized; they are the foundational elements that will prepare your child for Kindergarten.

Basic Math Concepts

The foundational concepts of math are taught in a fun, hands-on way in a preschool classroom!

Counting and the basics of addition and subtraction are taught with things like beans, crayons, or even cereal pieces to create visual and tactile math problems.

These lessons might be simple, but they build a child’s understanding of more, less, and how math can help us figure out everyday problems.
